This presentation is an analysis of results from the twelve demonstration projects under NRCan’s Smart Grid Program which ran from 2018-2023. Projects were implemented by electricity utilities and system operators, and focused on grid modernization, advanced distribution system operations, and a more active distribution system. NRCan has examined aspects of these projects including technology selection, system design, market design, and rate structures and how they achieved the capabilities sought. The analysis highlights key innovation achievements across three pillars, namely technology, business, and institutional innovation. Finally, we consider remaining challenges and barriers across these pillars which may offer opportunities for further innovation in Canada.
